STILLWATER, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- July 4 celebrations with fireworks are possible because of the booming sounds on a battlefield in the Capital Region back in 1777. The Battles of Saratoga were a turning point in the American Revolution, a crucial victory that changed the course of the war for the colonists and the world.    Garrett Cloer, Program Manager for Interpretation and Visitor Experience at Saratoga National Historical Park in Stillwater, says up to that point, "The war got off to a really good start. Washington pushes the British out of Boston but after that the British came back with the largest amphibious force in the history of the world. So, when 1777 dawns the British are planning to crush the rebellion and a lot of America would have thought that was going to happen." Unkept promises for New York City's displaced asylees in the Capital Region

(NEWS10) - The asylees recently arriving in upstate New York were promised housing, medical services, and other aid but some of those promises are falling flat.  New York lawmakers continue to chip away at the many legal barriers keeping migrants from finding work. Asylees in Albany want work, not a handout Many state and local officials like Colonie Town Supervisor, Peter Crummey, say that New York City and federal government leadership has failed the asylum seeker.“How would you like to be the folks on the bus shuttled around from all over the country for six to seven months and being promised something without delivering it, and then inserting this broken program on upstate towns and counties, figuring that's the way to lead and take care of these poor folks. Capital City Rescue Mission celebrates Independence Day

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – People formed a line that stretched down the block at the Capital City Rescue Mission for its Independence Day picnic. Roughly 500 meals were served at the lunchtime celebration. Executive Director at the Capital City Rescue Mission Perry Jones says they look forward to doing special celebrations, like Tuesday’s picnic. Passengers trapped after plane goes down in Riverside County

Emergency crews responded to an airport in southwest Riverside County after a plane went down Tuesday afternoon, leaving an unknown number passengers trapped.The plane went down just after 2 p.m. near the 37000 block of Industry Way in French Valley, near the county-owned French Valley Airport.Cal Fire confirmed that the plane went down and said additional details would be released as more information became available.It's currently unclear if any injuries were reported and whether the plane was landing or taking off when it went down.Check back for details on this developing story.

Roundup Fire in San Bernardino County burns 35 acres

A brush fire that ignited in San Bernardino County late Tuesday morning has grown to over 35 acres, officials say.The blaze, called the Roundup Fire, was reported by the San Bernardino County Fire Department at 11:50 a.m., after it began near Rattlesnake Canyon east of Hesperia and south of Apple Valley.A large plume of smoke was visible throughout the high desert, the agency said on Twitter. By 1:15 p.m., the fire had grown to 5 acres before growing to 15 acres minutes later. By 1:35 p.m., fire officials said it had grown to 31 acres and then 35 acres by 2:45 p.m.Smoke from the fire was visible throughout the area, officials said, though the rate of spread was slow and no structures were immediately threatened.

Costa Mesa police make arrest in man's murder

The Costa Mesa Police Department has arrested the person believed responsible for a man's murder late Monday night.The victim was found lying on the sidewalk near Sterling Alley and Pomona Avenue around 10:45 p.m. The man was shot multiple times, police say. Officers administered first aid at the scene until paramedics arrived to take him to a nearby hospital where he later died. Burglar shoots dog during Los Angeles home invasion He was identified by police Tuesday as Jonathan Ray Valdez, 38, of Costa Mesa.The Police Department released information about the deadly shooting early Tuesday morning, asking the public for any information that leads to an arrest.
